How to use the Fear & Greed Index

The index summarises crypto market emotion in one number from 0 to 100. Below 25 is extreme fear, 25 to 44 is fear, 45 to 55 is neutral, 56 to 74 is greed and above 75 is extreme greed. It is published daily by alternative.me.

Contrarian investors treat extreme fear as a possible accumulation zone and extreme greed as a warning that the market may be overheated. The "What Bitcoin did next" panel shows what actually happened over the following 30 days after each zone in the available history, so you can judge how reliable that idea has been.

The index is daily and lags fast moves. Use it for context alongside price structure, funding and liquidations rather than for entries.

What goes into the index?

According to its publisher: volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, surveys, Bitcoin dominance and search trends.

Can the index stay extreme for long?

Yes. In strong bull and bear phases it can sit in greed or fear for weeks, so extremes are not timing signals by themselves.

About the Fear & Greed Index

Reading it: the index combines volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, surveys, Bitcoin dominance and search trends into a single 0-100 score published daily by alternative.me. Extreme fear has often come near local bottoms and extreme greed near local tops, but neither is a timing signal on its own; combine it with price structure and positioning. The forward-return figures here are computed in your browser from the same history and are descriptive, not predictive.
